Jinan (济南) is the capital of the Shandong (山东) Province. Jianan Qu and Sonia Borkowicz performed an intervention in front of Jinan’s new museum to demonstrate the “corporeal” effect of Capitalism. More than 300 museums have been built in China in the last 2 years and have remained without any exhibition or audience. Although the cultural industry is a focus of development and many constructions are finished, there are only a few exhibitions. The museum resembles a diamond, affirms the French architectural firm, the newly built opera house nearby projects further visions. “The project becomes a ‘Gesamtkunstwerk’ which can take part in a modern society where different interpretations are possible according to different imaginations,” proclaims the French architect Paul Andreu. These empty museums and cultural institutions – it seems to me – are the result of the surplus production of the culture industry as the monument of our times where modernity has exhausted itself. The modern society turns people into the audience and the actor of its own spectacle. [2016]
